Camera surveillance
The Swedish Coast Guard uses camera surveillance in order to carry out its assignments more efficiently with regard to rescue services and maritime surveillance, as well as to support its own work environment and operational safety.
General information about the Swedish Coast Guard’s camera surveillance
The rescue services include environmental rescue services and other rescue services at sea. Maritime surveillance includes law enforcement, the maintenance of public order and security, and maritime control and enforcement activities. Our own work environment and operational safety include the safety of our personnel, our facilities, and vessels, as well as, for example, risk minimisation when mooring or launching.
Locations and forms of camera surveillance
The Swedish Coast Guard conducts camera surveillance of places to which the public has access only when the interest in camera surveillance outweighs the individual’s right not to be monitored. In cases where the Swedish Coast Guard conducts camera surveillance in areas to which the public has access, the authority has conducted an assessment in the individual case that the interest in having camera surveillance weighs heavier.
The Swedish Coast Guard’s camera surveillance activities can be conducted with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as well as with fixed cameras at our facilities or on our vessels.
Processing of personal data
Camera surveillance means that personal data must be processed, this is done on the basis of the following legal grounds:
In the case of camera surveillance in maritime surveillance that takes place in support of the Swedish Coast Guard’s law enforcement activities, the Swedish Coast Guard uses, when processing personal data, the legal basis of preventing, hindering, detecting criminal activity, investigating or prosecuting crimes or maintaining public order and security.
In the case of camera surveillance in rescue services and such maritime surveillance that forms part of the Swedish Coast Guard’s other assignments, the Swedish Coast Guard uses the legal basis of public interest when processing personal data.
The Swedish Coast Guard provides information on its camera surveillance through signage where the surveillance is being carried out. Information about upcoming and ongoing camera surveillance with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is provided through signs posted at the site and on this website.
As someone under surveillance, you can exercise several rights related to the personal data the Swedish Coast Guard processes about you.
