There are two types of cookies, persistent cookies and session cookies. Persistent cookies are stored on your computer for a longer period of time, either until they expire or the user deletes them. Session cookies are temporarily stored and are removed when the user ends the session (by leaving the website). The Coast Guard's website uses both kinds of cookies, but mostly persistent cookies.
