Support for the Ukrainian Coast Guard

KBV 048 also participated in the operation from the Coast Guard

The Government has instructed the Coast Guard to donate equipment to Ukraine. The Coast Guard will also be initiating cooperation in the field of civilian maritime security with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Two environmental protection vessels, KBV 047 and 048, and vehicles are included in the equipment donation mission. The equipment has already been scrapped. The Coast Guard donated jet-skis earlier in 2024.

“Ukraine is in great need of equipment. Of course, we’re prepared to share whatever we have that Ukraine needs. If equipment that the Coast Guard can spare can be used by them, we’ll do whatever we can to help,” says Henrik Jonsson, Head of the Coast Guard’ Material and Local Supply Department.

The capacity and resilience of civil society are crucial to military defence, which is one of the reasons why the civilian support that the Coast Guard can provide is in demand. What this cooperation with the Ukrainian authority involves in practice is not clear as yet.

“We’re proud that the Government has assigned us this important task, and that our expertise is in demand. Donating equipment is one thing, contributing expertise is another. We need to establish contact in order to work out what we can do that they need. And we approach our cooperation with them with a sense of humility, because our colleagues in Ukraine have hard-won experience that we lack,” says Henrik Jonsson.

At a general level, this cooperation means

  • exchanging experiences and methods in the field of secure supply chains
  • ensuring the resilience of critical infrastructure and functions
  • ensuring maritime safety
  • exchanging experiences and methods to identify, analyse and respond to undue influence on information
  • preventing and responding to hybrid threats.
